Tools for Self Reliance
Southwell group
Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR) receives unwanted hand tools for cleaning and refurbishing. These tools are then sent through the National Charity HQ to meet many local needs in various African countries. In Southwell, a local TFSR group started in January 2001, based under the Methodist Church, which is, in fact, the only Church in the town with a workbench!
Donated tools ready for sorting and improvement
Around ten volunteers meet on the last Monday evening of each month from 7.30–9.30 pm (except bank holidays) for an active work session. Some volunteers take tools home for improvement between sessions.
Simple work by volunteers ensures a new life for the tools
Could you work with these tools?
Tools needed are any for hand work in wood, metal, leather, building, general and vehicle maintenance. Hand operated sewing machines are in particular demand. In its first 6 years, the group has already sent 54 kits, totalling around 3300 tools, and around 70 sewing machines, all destined for African Countries. In addition, 4 van loads of un-refurbished tools have been sent to Africa or other charities.
