Live at Home was founded by Methodist Homes (MHA) in 1988 and is intended to support older people living in their own homes who may be socially isolated. It is one of the Methodist charities. There are now over 70 such schemes throughout England tailored to local needs but typically including friendship groups, befriending on an individual basis, lunch clubs, activities, outings, and advice on such issues as staying healthy and IT support.

The aim of each scheme is to improve the quality of life of older people by providing opportunities for them to meet friends and join in different initiatives whilst being helped/supported by dedicated volunteers.

In Southwell there are two lunch clubs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, a coffee/friendship group which meet on Tuesday mornings, a craft group on Wednesday afternoons together with monthly visits to play boccia ( a type of bowls played sitting down ), meals out, and befriending for individuals.

You may be someone who could benefit from being a part of Live at Home or know of someone who could be a member or volunteer. We are looking to expand the membership and to increase the number of volunteers. Could you give time to help by befriending a housebound person, serving at lunch club or driving someone to one of the activities? You wouldn’t have to do it every week and could choose your times according to your availability. You would gain great satisfaction from helping others and meet new friends.

The scheme’s area of operation is generally within a 5 mile radius of Southwell and incorporates Farnsfield and Kirklington.
