The Committee is ecumenical and currently has 6 members, representing four of Southwell’s Churches. We work together to co-ordinate Christian Aid's annual door-to-door collection, both in Southwell and the surrounding villages. The representatives of the churches act as contact points for more than 100 volunteers who collect and count donations every year. Annually between £7000 & £8000 is sent to Christian Aid.
Christian Aid Week 14-21 May 2017 is the 60th anniversary of Christian Aid. Formed to support the work of British and Irish churches with refugees in the aftermath of the Second World War, the particular focus this year is on refugees.
Today, 65 million people across the globe have fled their homes because of disasters and conflicts. Many have endured years of insecurity. Christian Aid Week remains a massive movement of people, uniting 20 000 churches to demonstrate Jesus’ justice. Christian Aid remains unwavering in its efforts to bring security and comfort to people who have had to leave their homes and find themselves stranded in refugee camps when borders are closed. Monies raised are used to advocate policies that protect refugees and to help them on the ground.
Throughout the year we also co-ordinate lobby campaigns by various Aid Organizations, and supply Gift Catalogues at Christmas. Each year we organize a Hunger Lunch for Christian Aid during Lent.
New delegates on the Committee and new volunteers to collect or count during Christian Aid Week or help with our events are always needed and can be sure of a warm welcome.
